15+ Bathroom Organizing Ideas: Inexpensive + Easy!

For some organizing is fun (some meaning the 1% of you anal peeps out there), but for most (the other 99% of us – me included) it can be a bit grueling + tedious task to get organized. But admittedly, once a space, a closet, or a room, is organized, I always feel empowered, happy, and a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.  Are you the same?

As I mentioned yesterday, I am in full-on organizing mode since the new year began and after anticipating writing one post on organizing every nook & cranny in the home, it evolved into a week’s worth of organizing inspiration starting with the 20+ ideas for the kitchen that I shared yesterday.

Today’s focus… THE BATHROOM.

I am still on a mission to clean this place up, bag it up – send it out, & get organized in 2015!  For me, it’ll never be 100% picture perfect, but this is a home of 5 not a museum.  As I’m working on purging + organizing + renewing my home this year, I am also striving to focus on what’s most important to me and living with intention!  Admittedly, it’s not easy, but with often reminders (to myself) I am working towards being more mindful and living with purpose.

6 Foolproof Steps to Purge + Organize + Renew your Home

With the 859,934 organizational pins on Pinterest, I’m already feeling a bit behind + overwhelmed and it’s only the 5th of January!  Deep breath. Deep breath.  Please tell me I’m not alone… BUT I am strongly pushing away those anxious thoughts and instead putting my efforts on living with intention, my focus for the coming year.

Organizing doesn’t come easy to me.  I am known to be a hoarder collector & have difficulty parting with things – keep or toss, keep or toss???  But over the past few months things around the little ole’ homestead of mine have gotten a wee bit out of hand (I guess anew baby can do that to ya) and I am ready to rise above & take back this joint!

As we wind down from the Christmas craze, January typically is a quiet + cold + drear month in our neck of the woods.  As I start the process of transitioning our home back to the everyday after the holiday mayhem, I always feel the New Year is ideal to clear the mind and begin a fresh start.  Now is the time to clean house and create a more organized home!!

This past weekend, actually news years day to be exact (because over the past week I’ve completely lost track of time), I started the clearing out/organizing process.  4 bags have already gone to goodwill… go me!  Coming from the person who hates to throw things away, this is big.

Here are the 6 steps that I have found really work [my foolproof tips] to purge + organize + renew your home for a fresh step in the right direction for the New Year

6 Foolproof steps to PURGE + ORGANIZE + RENEW your home in the new year! www.jennaburger.com

1. Make a list
I am a list person. I love to write it down, perform the task, and then cross it off.  To me, the “cross off” is the best part.  I feel so accomplished afterwards! So here is what I do…

Go room to room around the home and make a list of what is working and what isn’t.  Look in the closets, peek under the beds, and open the drawers. Create a page for each room and write down a plan of action for what you want to organize and what you need to lose (ie: organize sock drawer, purge papers/magazines, donate unused toys, etc).

6 Foolproof steps to PURGE + ORGANIZE + RENEW your home in the new year! www.jennaburger.com

A list will keep you focused + stay on track. When a task is complete, cross it off. Once all the tasks on your list are finished, the best part is reflection; looking back at all your hard work + efforts. It will also keep you motivated to do more!

2. Get Moving

Once your plan of action is in place, it’s time to get moving. Don’t analyze (which I’m known to do) Just start.Choose a room to start with and let your list guide you. Most likely, the whole house won’t be fully organized in a day – it’s simply not possible unless you already live in a spotless pad.

Instead of stressing and overwhelming yourself, set a time limit or a specific goal to work towards. Once it’s reached, be done. Then the next day, do the same. This will help avoid burn-out and will keep you motivated to continue. Organizing and taking control of the stuff in your home can be exhausting, so mentally prepare yourself for the job.

You’ll be amazed at how much better every room in your home looks once you get rid of the useless items.  Like I said 4 bags already packed up & shipped out.  Many more to go!

3. Purge. Toss. Donate.

Just keep saying to yourself… purge, toss, donate.  purge, toss, donate.  purge, toss, donate.

When going room by room, start by sorting through the items you no longer need, use, and/or want. Set up 3 boxes or bags (I typically use large heavy-duty garbage bags) to purge, toss, and/or donate. This will make the process faster + more efficient.  Have you ever tried the 3-for-1 rule?  For every new item you bring into the home (think about all those Christmas presents – shirts, books, toys, etc.), say goodbye to three things. Keep in mind, if something hasn’t been touched/used in 6-12 months, you probably don’t need it.

If you don’t use it, lose it.

PURGE. TOSS. DONATE. 6 Foolproof Home Organizational Tips that will get you pointed in the right direction NOW!

Once you have everything bagged up, ship it on out as soon as you can.  That way there can’t be regrets or second guessing!

And toss the miss-matched hangers! Go for all one color… IT’S LIBERATING!

PURGE. TOOSS. DONATE. 6 Foolproof Home Organizational Tips that will get you pointed in the right direction NOW!

4. Organize

Organizing is different than cleaning.  Sometimes the 2 can get confused (according to my Mister).  I am a great cleaner (surface cleaning), but when you open a drawer, it often doesn’t look so hot.

Once you’ve removed your unused items, it’s time to organize. I have found baskets, bins, trays, and other storage caddies are a great way to organize items you want to keep. Make a point to have a spot / a place for everything. This is especially key to keep the clutter in check with kids toys, books, games, and art supplies.

Fullscreen capture 152015 100438 AM.bmpMy newly revamped bookcase…  Baskets + Boxes + Bins are my happy place!

And keep in mind, it doesn’t have to look perfect because the reality is it won’t stay that way for long.  As long as everything you keep is needed and placed/arranged in an orderly way, that is ‘perfect’.  Take a glimpse at my newly organized closet…  To some it may still look a mess, but to me, this is good!  Shirts are together.  Pants are in one section. Scarves are in a bin. Bags are in place.  DONE!

5. Go Vertical

Maximize your storage capabilities by using more wall space. Bookshelves are great for going vertical to get things off the ground, thus creating more floor area. In closets, add shelving as high as possible for extra storage of blankets or non-everyday essentials. Add hooks in the entry for additional coat/bookbag storage. Hang additional shelving in the basement and/or garage for more space to put large bins.

Get Organized! For an easy entry upgrade, add built-in coat hooks and wooden crates [easy do it yourself project] www.jennaburger.comour entry coat rack > click for DIY Tutorial

A side tip for you >>> Choose furniture that can serve double duty to save on space!

6. Commit

The most important, but most difficult part of organizing…

Getting organized is one thing, but staying organized is truly a commitment. Once you’re organized, take the extra 10 minutes each day to tidy up and monthly to go through each room to purge any unused items or papers. Each night once the kids are in bed, I make sure all their toys are back in place, the dishes are done, the counters + tables are cleared off.  It’s amazing what 10-15 can do to get the job done rather than piling up day after day!

Decide. Commit. Succeed.

Expect that there will be minor setbacks throughout the year (not a biggie), but remaining positive+ focused will help keep you motivated to stay organized.

While the snow is piling up outside, put that overabundance of extra energy and efforts into purging and organizing inside.  The simpler we live, the saner we are! Rid your lives of the clutter and unused things to achieve a more meaningful, organized home.

What ideas / tips / suggestions can you share that keep your home organized + clutter free?

2014 Year in Review… a look back

I feel like I say this way too often, but seriously, Where does the time go?

As another year comes to an end, I love taking a few minutes to reflect + reminisce on all that I’ve worked on & accomplished over the past 12 months.  And it has been quite a year, for sure.

From being featured in 6 national magazines ( > see them all here), to revamping 4 spaces ( > boys bedroom + master + patio + bathroom), to completing 3 client kitchens ( > see one of them here), to having a NEW BABY (my biggest + best accomplishment of 2014), it has been an incredibly busy, but joyously & rewarding year.

Take a look back on all the highlights of 2014 with a year in review!

As always, it’s fun and a bit bittersweet to take a stroll down memory lane.  Let’s see what exciting + crazy adventures I got myself into to over the last 365 days

Central Command Center revamp (again) - creating a central "spot" that works for your family!

January started out with a bang when I was finally able to sing from the treetops that my kids and I were featured in the I Did It section of Better Homes & Gardens.  Third times a charm, right, and the year began with me sharing our revamped (again) Central Command Center.  As our family needs changed, the CCC was updated to follow suit.  Even today, it looks a bit different than it did a year ago.  As the first month of the year continued, I made some updates in the kitchen to add some color + openness – an update that I am still enjoying today.

The biggest post of the month was the announcement that our family was expanding.  After a rough 3 months prior, it was exciting to finally spill the news.  After that, I shared ideas for our kids sharing a room (even though they ended up not).  A few days later I shared even more inspiration for shared kids bedroom spaces, which then started the process of making over my son’s bedroom.

But before that, the master…

Master Bedroom Makeover with many DIY projects

Valentine Wreath using Paint Chips

As February rolled around, I shared my Valentine wreath (still my favorite to date) and started the room makeover #2 for the year, my master bedroom. After choosing a darker color for the bed wall, I painted a desk using my own chalk finish formula, jazzed up store-bought curtain panels by adding a leading edge fabric, and made a light fixture with a capiz shell pendant.  A little rearranging of the walls to create a large picture gallery wall to conceal the TV completed the makeover and the master bedroom refresh was finished!

Then back to my boys bedroom…

Rolling Cart toy storage

A kitchen I designed on the cover of KBMO

Then March rolled around and I was back to room makeover #1, my son’s bedroom.  The plan was for my 2 older kids to share a bedroom, but when we found out Baby #3 was a girl, that plan went out the window.  Since his room was already in the midst of a revamp, we just continued with it…  I started with painting the walls a lighter hue, hanging a fun wallpaper, and adding much-needed storage for toys!  March also was an exciting month when I shared the ‘after’ of a client kitchen I had worked on and the feature of another client kitchen which was on the cover of Better Homes and Gardens Kitchen + Bath Makeovers.

Hexagon Shelves

Frame Turned Tray

April was welcomed with a mix of projects and creations…  From creating 2 DIY colored Easter eggs (using crayons and food coloring), to sprucing up the foyer for Spring, to making a jewelry holder, it was a month of transition to the warmer months to come.  And of course, I continued to work on my son’s room and created my favorite DIY project of the year, the wood honeycomb shelves.

Outdoor Deck

May, the month we were finally able to spread our wings and spend more time outdoors than in.  Throughout the month I worked a little here and a little there… I continued working on my son’s bedroom makeover by painting his closet door with a pop of color and creating instagram art for the walls.  Additionally I collaborated with Lowe’s in May on an “Ugly Bathroom” campaign and shared 5 ways to update a bathroom on a budget + design solutions for an ‘ugly bathroom’. Have a bathroom in need of a makeover, then this post is a must-read. Finally by the end of the month, the Spring weather was incredible so I spruced up our outdoor deck and created a plan for our patio makeover.

8-545x800

As June rolled around, I was getting bigger by the minute and slowing down fast.  BUT, we managed to finish the patio makeover (which came out dreamy) and I also shared a peek at the new nursery nook that was created for baby #3.  I also had a little downtime strawberry picking with my girl and shared 15 must-try strawberry recipes (you will definitely WANT these for Spring!).  The month also brought the start of Year 2 of the Creating a Meaningful Home blog series.  My friend, the incredibly talented Melissa of The Inspired Room, started out the series with some beautiful thoughts + words about what fills a home with meaning.

By month’s end, our best DIY + biggest accomplishment of 2014 arrived

and she’s now 6 months old.

Here are my clan of 5 just a few days ago on Christmas…

My clan of 5

Where has the time gone?!

Boy Bedroom Reveal

July was quiet.  You probably don’t need me to tell you why…  But action on the blog didn’t stop.  More of my great friends – Carrie, Jennifer, Jaime, Jenna, Carmel, + many more – filled the days with posts on how they’ve made their homes meaningful.  July also brought the reveal of my son’s bedroom makeover.  I, of course, finished it before the baby arrived, but hadn’t had a chance to share it.  The result was pretty spectacular!

My chat with David BromstadAugust was just as crazy + hectic at our homestead, but on the blog even more friends opened their beautiful homes for the Creating a Meaningful Home blog series.  Additionally, I shared my announcement of being featured 3x in one national magazine, had a chat on the phone (for real) with celeb-designer + HGTV star David Bromstad, and got an incredible new mattress (the best ever & I am still sleeping like a baby)!

Reupholstering a bench

Fullscreen-capture-8292014-71304-AM

By September, I started getting my s**t together a bit more.  The kids were back in school, my little baby was 2 months old, and I actually started to shower again (ha, some days).  I also started getting my DIY groove back and tackled a few new projects like reupholstering the dining bench, making a window valance, and starting the china cabinet makeover that I found on Craiglist.  This month, I also shared inspiration on making DIY window treatments, gorgeous Fall spaces, and EVERYTHING FALL – all my seasonal posts in one place.  The month didn’t end without a huge highlight… my home on the cover of STORAGE magazine. {squeal + two pinches to make sure this is reality}.

Craigslist China Cabinet Makeover

Fall Tablescape

October rolled around and I was in full-on DIY mode with my latest + greatest makeover, the china cabinet!  From prepping + sanding, to priming, to painting this cabinet got a major transformation.  The result was pretty fabulous!  October also brought a beautiful Fall tablescape creation & the start of #4 room makeover, the bathroom.

Bathroom Makeover

November was filled with a mix of the bathroom makeover + Christmas prep (with a nature-inspired theme). The bathroom makeover was hands-down my biggest & toughest DIY makeover to date.  With it not being the typical paint + fabrics, but instead demo, tiling (big time), plumbing, wallpapering, and more, this was a full-on challenge.  But I am always up for a challenge and we (the Mister + I) pushed through!  psst… final reveal coming next week.

Christmas Home Tour 2014

And lastly, but certainly not least… The last month of the year, December.  I always find this month bittersweet.  There is so much excitement leading up to Christmas and then when it’s over and the stillness + quietness set in and time allows for reflection, it’s brought with smiles + a few tears.  Smiles for all the good and tears for it going all too fast…  This month has been a great one starting off with my Christmas Home Tour which was apart of the Jennifer Rizzo Holiday Housewalk for the 2nd year.  After that I shared more details on my mantel, progress of the bathroom makeover,  and a look ahead at the new color of the year, Marsala.

New Site - JennaBurger.com

December also brought the exciting change / upgrade of my website.  As I head into Year 5 of my business + blog (yes I started this whole thing in 2010), I felt my site no longer reflected what I was feeling.  In 5 years, my design style has grown + evolved, and I wanted my site to evoke that simpler, cleaner, but eye-popping aesthetic.  That being said, my mission to inspire & live with meaning will always be at the forefront of my blog and business!

So raise your glasses (or your cup of Joe) and Cheers to a wonderful year that is winding down & an even better year to come!

As I did last year, I am hooking up with a few of my blogging besties, Jessica of Decor Adventure & Carrie of Making Lemonade, to host a link up party for fellow bloggers who have also created a “Best of 2014” or a “Year In Review” post. These posts are always a fun + fantastic recap highlighting the biggest accomplishments throughout the year.

Year in Review Link Up!

After you link up your post, head on over to Carrie and Jessica’s blogs where they are sharing their recaps + your “Best of 2013″ posts will be seen on their blogs too.

The only party guidelines: Visit the co-hosts and if you link up, perhaps publicize the party on Facebook or Twitter so others can find out about it as well. The more the merrier!

E-Design: Online Interior Design Services

I’m so bad at promoting myself, not because I’m bad at what I do, but because I never want to be pushy or come across as arrogant (because I’m really not a fan of the in your face, salesman-y, self-promoting type).  But after much thought, a need to work, and pushes encouragement from a few friends, I’m writing a post about something other than my blog, which is my Interior Design business.

So along with my blog, you might not know/realize that I also have an interior design business where I work with clients to create spaces that they never thought imaginable.  I am so grateful because I have worked with some really amazing people, many of which have spaces/homes that I’ve had the opportunity to showcase in national publications – bonus!  The great part about my business is that I not only work with people in my area (upstate New York) but all across the country, thanks to the power of the internet.  The web has enabled me to work with people in Arkansas, Florida, NYC, New Jersey, and beyond.  I refer to these non-local collaborations as E-Design projects.

What is E-Design?

Why E-Design?

1. No time constraints.  The space can come together at your pace.  Whether you want to execute the room(s) overnight or take 2 years from start to finish, the room(s) can evolve as you’d like.  Once your plan is complete, it’s in your hands. You decide whether to move forward with the exact suggestions or use them as inspiration to find something else.  You’re in control.

2. It’s laidback + comfortable + unintimidating.  Once we correspond via email, you send pictures + dimensions of the room(s) you want to work on, at your convenience.  No cleaning or making sure every space is ‘perfect’.  No need to schedule an appointment.  No need to be home at a certain time.

3. It’s affordable. Working with a designer, is often thought to be very costly and only for those with huge budgets, but that isn’t always true.  When working with me, you will get the expertise of an educated, professional Interior Designer in a very affordable way.  I do the legwork and research to create a one-of-a-kind room and you simply need to execute and wait for the deliveries!

4. You know me. Well kind of. Honestly though, you see my work and design style/aesthetic through what I share on my blog.  I’m a straight-shooter and I truly love what I do.   If you like what you see from what I share, then you know that’s what you will get for your home.

Girl Nursery E-Design Project

How it works? The Process.

First, send an email to me – jennaburgerdesign@gmail.com – sharing details about your space(s).

> Are you starting from scratch?

> Or do you simply need help adding the finishing touches to pull a room together?

The more information, the better and faster we can get started.  I will email you back with a few more specifics + questions + the cost of the room design.  Once the invoice is paid, I get started on the design.

My turn-around time typically takes 2-3 weeks for a complete design.  Why so long? I like to take my time to create a room and not start/finish a design in one day.  I put a lot of time and effort into pulling a space together so it reflects the person who lives there.  I truly want every room to come together organically instead of wham-bam-done. Each room that I design is custom tailored to your style + budget.  No two rooms are alike!

Everything FALL! {all posts in one place}

I recently had a few readers reach out asking me about seasonal Fall projects.  In all honesty, other than my front porch, I’ve done nothing to spice up my home for Fall this year.  Lack of time I guess.  BUT, I have a slew of posts from the past on decorating for the Autumn season.  It is my favorite time of year after all, so this post is dedicated (and will be updated over time as needed) with posts of mine with all things FALL…

Check out these past posts to get your excited about the season.

7 Savvy Tips for Finding Thrifted Treasures

Once Spring hits, my brain goes immediately to the thoughts of garage sales & thrifting. We finally come out of Winter hibernation to get our feet wet and hands dirty in the garage by upcycling and transforming those blah finds to be beautiful.

7 Savvy Tips for Finding Thrifted Treasures - Tips + Tricks + Ideas for finding the perfect 'something'... Some of these simple ideas you may never thought of.

Hitting up a weekend garage sale or visiting a local thrift store is a great way to introduce unique, interesting, and inexpensive décor into your home. That “something special” is unlikely to be the same piece your neighbor picked up last week. Thrifting allows the opportunity to bring elements into a home that are meaningful and/or have the potential to be transformed or upcycled for little money. With the warmer days to come, it’s the perfect time of year to find some new fun and fabulous thrifty treasures.

With some garage sale + thrift hunting experience under my belt, these are 7 tips + tricks that I find helpful to find the perfect thrifted treasure…

1. The Best Spots for Thrifting
There are various types of venues to find used and/or thrifted items, including but certainly not limited to: thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets, antique malls, and even the side of the road (my personal favorite because the “treasure” is usually free – major score!)

Here’s my favorite side-of-the-road before & after

Thrifted treasures can be found anywhere. A garage sale, thrift store, or even the side of the road. That's where this chair beauty was found. Check out the before & after!

2. Keep a List
Looking for thrifted treasures can sometimes be overwhelming when you finally get to your destination, so having a list is key to staying focused. Either keep an ongoing list (I keep a list in myphone) or create one before you leave home. It will help keep you focused and evaluate what things you really need. If you have your eye out for a piece of furniture, take wall measurements ahead of time, so you’re fully prepared and aren’t questioning the size when you finally find “the one”.

3. Look for Good Bones
When on the prowl for thrifted decor, especially furniture, look at how it’s constructed; be sure it has good “bones”. The stability and structure of a piece of furniture is important for it’s longevity. If it gets the approval, using it as is or giving it a fresh new coat of paint will make the perfect addition in your home.

I found this beauty on Craigslist.  It had dovetail joints on the drawers and felt very stable.  At $50 it was a great score.  After a paint makeover, it was perfect for my boys room makeover

To find awesome thrifted treasures, look for good bones in old furniture!

Before & After Craigslist Desk. With some paint & TLC this desk got a complete makeover.

4. Think Outside the Box
When on the search for a new treasure, look beyond the items current state and imagine what it could be with a little TLC. Whether you decide to upcycle, repurpose, or revamp, think outside the box at the items potential.

Take a step back from an object and ask:

  • Can I paint it?
  • Can I reupholster it?
  • Can I use it for a different purpose it’s original intent?

This is my FAVORITE part of thrifting… finding an ugly duckling that just needs a little DIY love!  Like this clock to mirror makeover…

Before & After: Clock to Mirror

Before & After: Clock to Mirror

5. Look High. Look Low. Look Everywhere in Between.
Finding a secret treasure can sometimes be a challenge, but in the end, the result is often worthwhile. When shopping at a thrift store or garage sale, take an extra minute to scan all surfaces – the lower shelves, the higher ones, and every spot in between. O, and since the back corners are usually forgotten, they often have the best, hidden treasures.

Thrifted Treasures are all around you - high, low, in every nook & crannie

6. Do you really need it?
When thrifting, having your list in hand will help you stay on track. When you find something, ask yourself, “Do I really need this?” or “Where and how will I use this?”. Even if the item is a great deal, it’s worth nothing if it can’t be used. And if you’re unsure, take a minute to think about it.

My most recent find which fell short of a treasure because of the price tag, is this awesome life-size metal windmill.  How cool is it?!  I spotted it while driving by a local shop & had to take a closer look.  I asked myself, “Do I really need it even though I love it?”… At over $500 I passed, but I’m still thinking of a way to make it myself!

Thrifted Find

7. Negotiate.
One of the beauties about garage sales or thrift stores is the possibility of getting your treasure for a lower price than marked. It doesn’t hurt to ask. If they say no, then you can ask yourself if the item is really worth it and how much money needs to go into it, if any. Again, it doesn’t hurt to ask!

The best garage sale finds are usually snagged right away, so grab a cup of coffee and start your day early. As for thrift stores, if you want a great deal, ask them if there are specific days they put out new inventory (I do the same thing with stores like HomeGoods & TJ Maxx). If you’re looking for something specific, ask them to call you if the item comes their way.

I hope these tips help you prepare and get you excited for thrifting season. And don’t forget, shopping is always better with others, so put on your comfy shoes and team up with friends or family who also enjoy a finding a treasure!

What have been your favorite garage sale or thrift store finds?

5 Ways to Update a Bathroom on a Budget

There have been some really qualified “entries” for the ugly bathroom makeover.  I’m not going to lie…  some of you are in desperate need of direction & a plan on how to jazz up your bathrooms.  Most of the bathrooms I received pictures for, have good bones and are similar in layout of many homes, but they need to be taken to the next level to be practical and pretty!

Lowe’s and I are going through the pictures and next Monday will be the day when you’ll get to see what reader submitted bathroom we chose, along with a Creative Vision Board + ‘plan of action’ for the space.  In the meantime, I wanted to share my thoughts + ideas with ALL of you on 5 Budget-Friendly Ways to Update a Bathroom

5 Ways to Upgrade a Bathroom on a Budget: Don't neglect a needed bathroom revamp because of cost + no-experience. Instead, embrace what you have and revamp the layers of the existing!

I’ve been working on my fair share of client kitchens lately, which I adore, but I’m equally obsessed with revamping bathrooms.  Having an educational and professional background in architecture and interior design, I love how all the components- cabinetry, hardware, and all the details in between – come together and interlink to create an incredible result.  Even more so, I love all the added layers + color that can be brought into a bathroom to make it not only a functional space, but a magical oasis – remember I said last week, who doesn’t sneak away to the bathroom here and there for some peace + quiet?!

Unlike a typical 4 walled room in a house, bathrooms (as well as kitchens) can seem daunting when thinking about a makeover.  There’s plumbing, electrical, tile, and more that is involved in changing.  BUT, instead of neglecting the idea of an overwhelming revamp, embrace what you have and revamp the layers of the existing.  Not only will a budget-friendly bathroom makeover increase the value of your home, but it will also simply make you happy!

Ditch those apprehensive, scary thoughts and let me share my 5 Ways to Update a Bathroom on a Budget…

1. Paint

Easy (well fairly easy) and cheap!  There is nothing like a fresh new coat of paint on the walls!  And for a typical bathroom, from start to finish, it should really only take a few hours. Since the fixtures of a bathroom are often white or light-colored, think about adding a pop of color on the walls.  Or, if you’re desiring a serene and calming space, go light  – not white, but light.

Let’s start off with a bang.  Check out one of my all-time favorite before and after bathroom makeovers that incorporates a splash of color + fun on the walls, via BHG

Splash of color on the walls of the bathroom

To step it up a notch, consider painting the existing bathroom cabinet.  It’s not uber difficult to remove / upgrade a bathroom cabinet, but it does involve plumbing and the possible install of a new countertop and/or sink.  If that’s not within your wheelhouse, a new coat of paint will be the answer.

Whether wood or laminate, the bath cabinet can most likely be revamped.  If it’s not structurally stable or you don’t love the look, ditch it, but if it can be used there is a little prep work before you paint…  Start by removing the doors and give them a good cleaning (diluted all-purpose cleaner, wood cleaner, or white vinegar with a little warm water usually works). Lightly sand the surface – using a hand sander is best.  Then add a primer to seal the wood underneath and to give a solid base coat for the paint to adhere to. Then using a roller / brush combination or a hand sprayer, apply at least two coats of paint (read all instructions ahead of time and follow the directions on the product). The transformation will be breathtaking.

2. Hardware

The layers of any space are key to making it unique and interesting.  An easy upgrade in a bathroom is adding or changing the hardware on the bath cabinet.  I’ve found that bath cabinets often don’t have any knobs or pulls, and once added the cabinet always comes alive.  The cheap builder-grade vanity in my master bath had no hardware, so using a drill, I drilled 2 holes, added crystal knobs, and now the “black dress” is accessorized!

I love the new paint color on that cabinet & the new hardware looks fabulous!

3. Lighting

I feel the light fixture in a space is so important.  A fixture can truly make or break a room, and typically I live by the motto GO big, or GO home!  How many of you have those old eye-ball style fixtures with 3 or 5 or 7 bulbs across and every time you walk into the bath you cringe because it’s so bright? {It’s okay to raise your hand}.  Ditch em’!  I’m all for good light in a bath space, but you don’t need a blinding light that is glaring into your eyes every time you enter.  Upgrade to a fixture(s) that is different and maybe not typical for a bathroom.

I’m still loving the $17 light that I found at Lowe’s for my powder room.  The ‘before’ light was fine, but expected.  This light is functional + exciting >

4. Flooring

I know, it sounds like a big, scary project, but it doesn’t have to be!  As you may know, I continually profess my love for groutable luxury vinyl tile (LVT).  It’s a quick, easy (no experience needed), and budget-friendly way to cover up the ugly mess of a floor that you may have.  And if you don’t have an ugly mess of a floor, you might just want a change and LVT flooring is the answer.   There are also a bunch of other flooring out there that you may love and adore, but either way, new flooring will truly jazz up a bathroom hands-down!

Here’s a recent update I shared on how the groutable luxury vinyl tile floor has held up after 2 years.  If you’re thinking of installing this type of flooring in a bath or any space of a home, this is a must-read!

Another idea for an easy flooring upgrade is wood laminate, which most of the time can be installed directly over your existing floor.  Take a look what Jen of I Heart Organizing did with her bathroom reno…

5. Layers

Last, but certainly not least, but actually the most important…  The Layers!  If you’re on a bare bones budget and have very little to spend, focus on the layers.  What layers? a pretty shower curtain, a simple window treatment (if you’re bath has a view of the exterior), artwork, hooks, shelving, etc.  The layers in any room of the home speak your style and share the story of who you are.

You saw a peek of Jen’s bathroom above, and here is the finished revamp >

The layers of a space are the most important. In a bathroom, incorporate a pretty shower curtain, shelving, artwork, and anything that simply makes you happy. How fabulous of a space and it ‘s mostly all existing and/or DIY!

Another amazing transformation is Paige’s hall bath of Lively Green Door >

Are you now convinced that a bathroom doesn’t need a full gut to be fabulous?  Who’s ready for a makeover?

As always, incorporate elements you love & those that are truly meaningful.  Look for inspiration around you before executing, and remember it’s not a race.  Now I’ve gotta get back to looking through all those ugly bathrooms to see which would be perfect for a makeover!  Be sure to check back on Monday to see if it’s yours!

Kitchens are another space in the home that homeowners fear to upgrade because of time and budget.  Totally understandable!  BUT just as the bathroom can be revamped on a budget, so can a kitchen.  Check out my thoughts for 5 Upgrades to a Killer Kitchen

Decorating with Leaning + Ladder Shelves

Within the past two months, I’ve purchased 4 leaning shelves (a.k.a. ladder shelves).

Obsessed? No.

Great for storage? Affordable? Open + Airy?  Yes.

For the same reason, I’ve been loving leaning shelves as of late, I’ve got my clients hooked too and I’d like to share with you why leaning shelves work so well for any room in the home.

Decorating with Leaning + Ladder Shelves - Leaning Shelves are affordable, open + airy, and bring great height to a space. So much inspiration + ideas in THIS POST!

Any style shelf gives height to the room. Most pieces of furniture (tables, sofa, chair, bed, etc) aren’t higher than 30/36″ off the floor, which often leaves pictures / artwork to be the only source of height in a room.  As much as it’s important to have “things” on the wall, it’s also important to break up the monotony and a bookcase / shelves can be that element.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the look of a closed bookcase, but I also really prefer the style of a leaning shelf.

Why?

> Height: Art + pictures are a must on the walls, but without anything else to grab the eye and break up the plane, a space can become boring and lack depth.  By adding shelving, specifically leaning shelves, a wall can have the needed to break and 3-dimensional look needed to add visual interest.  With the addition of books, accessories, baskets, and more, the shelves can become the star of a room.

> Storage: The aesthetic part of shelves is that it brings height + interest to a room, but the storage element of shelving brings in the functional aspect.  Who doesn’t desire more storage in their house?  I certainly do {raising hand in the air}…  Adding in a tall element, like a shelf, allows you to use the vertical plane of the wall instead of the horizontal, floor area, of a room.  Save on floor area, use height instead!

> Affordability: Leaning Shelves are very affordable, probably because there really isn’t much too them.  The most recent style I chose, I purchased at Target for a few dollars over $100. I’ve also been wanting to make my own version – I think it would be fairly easy – but I’m still gathering the guts + time to do it.  Anyway, there are versions that are less than $100, like this one and styles that are a lot more (but are pretty fabulous) like this one at $1600.  Add height to a room for around $100? Perfect!

> Open + Airy: I specifically like the look of leaning shelves because they provide the height and the storage needed in a room, but they aren’t closed in as a typical bookshelf with a back + sides are.  The leaning shelf is minimal allowing for any size space (even small spaces like bathrooms & laundry rooms/nooks) to handle the horizontal attention-grabber.  Plus I’ve seen leaning shelves in a variety of widths, as well.

I must be on the right design track with my recent purchases because I opened two design magazines this month and they both featured spaces with leaning bookshelves.

After reading the first feature in the March issue of HGTV magazine, it ‘s what inspired me to write this post. I know you all would love and feel confident to use leaning shelves after seeing these inspirational spaces!

See how this ladder shelf gives so much height to the space, yet there is no real break of wall color or ‘closed-in’ feeling.

3. A leaning shelf in the entry

Essential for all the winter-wares, shoes, and bags!  The shelves allow space for the must-haves, along with some surface to display some pretty like a plant and cool fan.

4. A leaning shelf in the entry

Big or small, most bathrooms could use more storage.  Am I right?? And if you have a pedestal-style sink, you really are in need of more surface space.  A ladder shelf is the perfect solution for all your products + towels.

5. A leaning shelf in the laundry

Another spot that most everyone can use more space.  Depending on the layout of the laundry room or nook, a leaning shelf can provide the extra storage needed to keep the space tidy + organized.

After seeing all these ideas, I am sure you want to get your hands on some new shelving.  Am I right?  I put together a collection of a few favorites with resource links.

Recognize the room?  It’s my boys room that I am currently giving an overhaul.  work is still in progress…

I’m sharing this because it’s amazing how much these shelves have brought to the room!  The amount of storage / surface space is incredible.  From books, to ‘special things’ to ALL THE LEGOS, these shelves hold it all + have there is room for more.

My daughter’s room also got a leaning shelf.

We moved the pictures that were there into the master and added the shelf in it’s place to hold books, and of course ALL THE LEGOS!

Kitchen Revamp: Before + After

Oh My, where are the days going?  I swear, I wake up and 5 minutes later it is night time.  I can not keep ahead, but thankfully all is good – NO complaints, except for the bitter cold temps.  Some fun news to share…  I was in NYC for a quick trip late last week and met up with some blogger pals – Diane, Kelly, and Denise – for a Better Homes and Gardens event.  BHG, along with BrandSpark, invited some local bloggers to the Best New Product Awards, where we got to mingle with representatives of some big brands.  It was so fun to “get out” and meet others who are just as passionate as I.  I’ll have more to come soon on the products and a chance for you to win some cool stuff.

While I should have my feet up resting (at 5 months prego, my body is definitely feeling aches + pains), I’ve been busy busy with a few client kitchens – all at different phases of construction.  One I just started and have a design meeting for later today, another is mid-install, and another I just finished.  I shared a peak of it the recently completed kitchen the other day, but now it’s time to show more + it’s evolution…

Kitchen Remodel: Integrating / Reusing existing Ikea cabinets with new custom cabinets to match. Transformation is INCREDIBLE!

This kitchen was really wonderful to work on, but a definite challenge. For privacy sake, I can’t show the floor plan, but there was a large area of the “kitchen area”, which I would say technically was the eating area, that was unused.  Then the space for the “kitchen” with the cabinets was very small + tight.  When the client brought me in, she really expressed the want + desire to reuse much of the existing cabinetry.  The challenge?  They were faux wood/stained cabinets from Ikea and to match them exactly isn’t the easiest objective!  My carpenter/cabinet fabricator was up for a challenge…  Could he do it??

Here are a few before pictures…

before pictures of a Kitchen Remodel: Integrating / Reusing existing Ikea cabinets with new custom cabinets to match. Transformation is INCREDIBLE!

Once we discussed the scope of work + the clients needs + style, this was the Creative Vision Board that I created…

Creative Vision Board for Kitchen Remodel

The “known” of the space was the cabinetry.  The client wanted to match the new with the existing.  I spiced it up with the layers + details

>Lighting

>Fabric

>Tile

>Open shelving

These 4 elements brought the kitchen to the next level!

Lighting: The lighting before was very contemporary and did not fit the style of the house, which is old-world eclectic.  Yes, it has modern features, but certainly is not contemporary.  I wanted to bring in a sense of the handcrafted look and chose new fixtures for the space.

New Lighting for the Kitchen Remodel

Fabric: It’s often a challenge in a kitchen to bring in color, but fabric on a window can be the needed element to soften and liven a space.  The client and I looked at several options for window fabric and chose a modern pattern with colors of teal, mustard, and taupe.

Unfortunately, the window treatment is the only area of the space that is still incomplete.  We are awaiting the roman shade for the window.  Here are a few options we looked at before choosing #1…

Fabric Options for the Kitchen Remodel

Tile: Along with the cabinets, the countertop which is soapstone, was also staying.  To balance the darker hues of the cabinets and counter, I knew a lighter natural stone would be the perfect compliment.  The client and I visited a local tile shop and found this beautiful natural tile with light gray veining – the size: 2″ x 8″ – which was ideal.

Natural TileTile for the Kitchen Remodel

Open Shelving: To break up the monotony of the stained cabinets, I wanted to bring in an opportunity of open shelving to give the space more openness.  We chose for the shelves to be minimal and painted them to match the crown moulding that was added around the room.  The backsplash tile was also continued behind the open shelves to give a cohesive look.

With a few more tweaks + tricks throughout the space, it came together amazingly.  My carpenter is incredible and not only did he match the new with the old, he also used a few of the existing doors and reworked them to fit in new spots.  For example, using one of the old doors, he used part of it to create a pull-out spice rack which now sits next to the new dishwasher.
